Every year the number of new students leaving home to attend colleges and universities throughout the United States increases. For most, this is their first experience living away from home and while the transition is an exciting time in any young person’s life, it can also be very dangerous.

With this change, many students are exposed to a much broader cross section of society, from a more active night life to a growing circle of friends and acquaintances. Tragically, a number of these young people will find themselves in dangerous or unpredictable situations with no access to help from family, friends, or law enforcement.

The recent growth in the number of location-enabled wireless device has provided students and their parents with a new tool to help keep kids safe. These devices can be easily integrated into location-based services (LBS) applications, life Omnilink’s FocalPoint™, to enable students to transit a request for help and their current location on a moment’s notice.

The FocalPoint™ platform can be used to continuously track an individual carrying a location-enabled device whether they are indoors or outdoors. The same system can be used to send automatic alerts to specific individuals if a student leaves a specific location or enters an area that is “off limits."

Solutions built on the FocalPoint™ platform offer SMS and Panic features that will contact law enforcement with an individual’s current location simply by pressing a button. This tool significantly increases the likelihood that the authorities will be able to respond in time to help the student avoid harm.
